A favorite with international audiences and
performers acts from over 40 countries will be presented, with a large portion
of its 200,000 plus audience journeying from abroad to see the Tattoo spectacle.
An array of music, dance, and display, this year’s line-up includes acts from
Australia, the United States, Canada, and the Far East, along with Massed
Highland Dancers and the haunting sound of the Lone Piper.
Highlights include performances from The Massed Bands
of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, His Majesty the King’s Guards Band and Drill
Team of Norway and the celebrated Massed Pipes & Drums and The Band of the
Royal Regiment of Scotland.
With so much to plan for, the amount of preparation
that goes into organizing the spectacle is impressive. According to Major
General Loudon, the schedules for 2010 and 2011 are already almost full and he
is even thinking as far ahead as 2015.
Luckily, there’s no shortage of interest from
performers eager to cement their place in Tattoo history. ‘I don’t think there
is a week that passes when I do not receive a handful of DVDs or letters from
people around the world asking how they can participate. But what you’ve got to
do is sort out the probables from the possible. It involves a mixture of
quality, scale as a spectacle and making sure that when they perform, what
they’re trying to do is leave an impression on people that has either tugged
their heart-strings or made them stamp their feet. And if they can do both of
those things in the one-act, that’s a perfect solution.’

For the third time in the Tattoo’s history, acts
from Singapore will also make an appearance, including a detachment of Gurkha
Pipes and Drums together with a 55-strong Police Military Band and an all-woman
Police Pipe Band. Pupils from Queen Victoria School in Dunblane will also
present a display of piping, drumming and Highland dancing to celebrate their
school’s 100th anniversary.
