Edinburgh Military Tattoo packages:

There are many packages, some include a 4-course meal, champagne, or toast to the haggis. Some packages require dress code and some offer seats outdoors and others let you choose your seat.  Be sure to check what you are buying.

Something to consider:

Disabled Access:

If you have booked disabled/wheelchair seating –  you may be able to request a vehicle pass that will allow access to the Esplanade by car, taxi or ambulance. They are subject to availability and are not available for the preview evening or for any Saturday.

If you have a vehicle pass then you will go on convoy onto Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. Be aware if you are in a taxi you may be waiting for some period of time, pre-agree a set fare, many taxi or private chauffeur will help with this.
Large coaches:

Large coaches are not allowed to join the convoy. In The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, wheelchair seating is along the front rows of sections 1-5 and 12-17 at ground level and Section 10 facing Edinburgh Castle.

These spaces allow for an attendant’s seat.  There are medical services on the esplanade if required and help can be given to push wheelchairs up the cobbled street.
Also, remember that the convoy arrives before everyone is seated which means a longer evening.

If it is cool be prepared and bring a blanket, there are people to help and medics on-site if required. Hot drinks are also available to buy on the esplanade and seat cushions and ponchos.

Note:

No umbrellas, no flash photography, no alcohol and no glass bottles are permitted. Only small bags or rucksacks under 25 litres are permitted. All bags are searched. No vaping or smoking allowed in the tattoo arena. You will also need your ID with Tattoo Ticket entry as security is very tight.

What to wear to The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2020?

It may be warm, it may be cold. This is Scotland after all. Always wear layers and buy the £1 padded seat cushion at the event.

Take a warm jumper over a top. Warm coat with hood, remember, no umbrellas if it rains, comfortable shoes for walking up the cobbled Royal Mile and gloves in my pocket as a backup. The temp change dramatically around 9.30/10 pm and the later Saturday night 10.30 show will be significantly colder.

The queue to enter the Edinburgh Military Tattoo?

Everyone has allocated seating. It is a very long queue down Johnson Terrace and it’s uphill all the way back to the Castle.

There are no pre-show acts. The commentator is the only warm-up before the Tattoo starts. You may wish to be seated and enjoy the atmosphere. The entrance to the castle is narrow and cobbled and does a bottle neck. If you don’t like crowds wait till nearer showtime.

Restaurants:

There are plenty of restaurants around the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket offering something for everyone purse.

factors must consider when booking Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets 2020.

Tattoo Tickets Price

The more you pay, get the seat better.  A rough guide to the prices is sections 1/16 & 17 (dark blue and green) are the cheapest found nearest the castle and sections 8 and 9 (pink & purple) are the most expensive.

The only downside to the cheapest seats is that you may have slightly more awkward visibility to the fireworks display.

The other seats for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, (metal and quite steep) much prefer sitting in the middle sections 3/4 or 13/14/15  lower down.

The Light blue section offers excellent views and is reflected in slightly higher Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets prices in these sections. Blue Sections 2-5 and 12-15.

Tickets For Tattoo are priced dynamically, therefore, these seat prices may change subject to demand and availability. Order as early as possible before demand increases so much that the price does too!

The seats for the tattoo start at rows A/b/c and then after the alphabet, they begin in double letters. CC/DD, these seats will be higher up. At ground level the front two rows, A and B are reserved for wheelchair users.

Brown section: Sections 6/7, 10/11 brown colors are regarded as having good views and as such the price rises Fridays and Saturdays. There are no Tattoo performances on a Sunday.

Low-priced Tattoo Tickets:

If you apply for the preview Edinburgh Tattoo tickets before the official opening ceremony these are cheaper.

17-21 August at 9.00 pm 2020

These are the expected evenings the program is being recorded by the BBC for worldwide transmission at a later date.
August 12, 19, 26 August at 9.00 pm are off-peak evening shows and should be cheaper.

The Best view?

Everyone gets a really good view. People think that they have to sit high up to see but this is simply not the case. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is arranged and planned to enable everyone to see. The Regiments may enter from Edinburgh Castle but often other performers will enter from the center of the arena.

As the show starts, all artistes came the Royal Boxes initially (purple/pink sections 8/9) but then will move around the large esplanade.

DPA Microphones support The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo sound truly awesome

More than 100 microphones were used this year to amplify the sound of the 1500 musicians and performers who delivered spectacular shows every time, regardless of the weather.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2020 with its theme ‘The Platinum Edition’. Event fans who want to join this iconic festival can buy Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets from our most consistent and unfailing online platform.

In 2020, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has delighted visitors with a spectacular display of music and fireworks from the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. Throughout that time the show has been seen by thousands of people and has never been canceled due to inclement weather.

DPA Microphones support The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo sound truly awesome
DPA Microphones support The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo sound truly awesome

In 2019, DPA microphones have played a key part in delivering great sound for the show and 2018’s performances were no exception. In total, more than 110 DPA microphones were deployed across a wide range of musicians and performers, including a Malawian choir.

Sebastian Frost worked on this event for 23 years, specified a vast selection of d:screet™ 4061 Miniature Microphones, d:fine™ 4066 Headset Microphones and d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones incorporating the new CORE by DPA amplifier technology.

Sebastian Frost says, It's all about time-management and making sure that all the sounds produced by the various performers in different locations arrive at each audience member's ears at the correct time.

Getting all those performers to play at the same time, even though they can be 100 meters apart, is complex. More than 1300 performers taking part in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and we need to mic up a few hundred of them at various points in the show.

Sound equipment for the show was supplied by Wigwam Acoustics, which has been dealing with this event for many years.

They provide the most amazing support, Frost says, Not least from Katie Worsick who plans and configures the huge RF plot and systems. The microphones we use are half wireless and half wired.

This year, we used 20 IEMs for the mobile performers and 70 channels of radio mic, plus about 60 channels of fixed microphones for the choir, moat stage, boundary.

As a long term DPA fan, Frost had no hesitation in specifying the company’s products, particularly for an event where the weather can be unpredictable.

Continuity of sound and durability are my main reasons for choosing DPA, he explains. I've used DPA mics for a very long time and was, in fact, the first sound designer to use the d:fine™e 4065 Headset Microphones in the West End.

On a current show – The Last Ship, featuring music and lyrics by Sting - I used just two DPA models on the entire rig because they gave me predictable, even sound. It worked a treat, so I always try to do that now.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2020 | ‘The Platinum Edition’

Internationalism, Drama, Scottish Heritage, and Pageantry all these themes shine through at next year's Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2020 with its theme ‘The Platinum Edition’. Event fans who want to join this iconic festival can buy Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets from our most consistent and unfailing online platform.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has those in spades. Even if you can't get into the Preview Night, the Tattoo can still be a great deal. Of course, there are luxury seating ticket options available such as the 'Bruce Dining with Royal Gallery Seat' for £520 per person.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2020 | ‘The Platinum Edition’

An important tip when booking The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Tickets is to try to book as soon as Tattoo Tickets go on sale. That way, you can take advantage of a wider range in prices- starting from around £35 and up. What is important to note is that the way the stands are set up allows for great viewing from all locations and a variety of price points.

This year's central theme is ‘The Platinum Edition’ : A celebration of glorious symmetry' and a wonderful cacophony of colours and spectacle permeated each performance.

Some of favorites include the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force Steel Orchestra, Music De L'Artillerie from France, and the New Zealand Army Band. They all demonstrated showmanship and dazzled with their fun surprises- which included Carnival-esque dancers, a can-can dancer, and haka that got the whole crowd cheering.

There is no other place that can match the fantastic themes of Scottish heritage and pageantry than The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Hearing so many bagpipes and drums in one place is truly stunning.

This was perfectly demonstrated during one of the most epic moments at the very beginning during the Massed Pipes and Drums Performance. A host of regiments, bands, and guards from around the world entered the Esplanade from the Castle gate in truly dramatic fashion with lights, smoke, and fire giving a spectacular introduction.

A fun surprise throughout the evening's performances were the projections on the Castle. This technology is relatively new to Edinburgh Castle and it was beautiful to see a variety of images reflecting the 'Kaleidoscope' theme as well as tying in with the particular performances.

if you are coming to Edinburgh for the holiday season, make sure to check the Edinburgh Castle website for more details and information on that exciting show.
the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a charity, that’s provides donations to various organisations, and part of their annual donations help out local arts groups in the Edinburgh community.

They donate to The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Youth Talent Development Fund in conjunction with Creative Scotland to "provide young artists in Scotland with the opportunity to develop their skills in the realms of traditional music, piping, drumming, highland dancing and fiddle playing".

This is crucial because it helps to keep cultural traditions alive with the younger generations so that others will continue to enjoy the Tattoo for years to come.

It is definitely a show that is best experienced in-person. There's something incredible about having an entire crowd of people hold hands and sing Auld Lang Syne (written by that most famous Scot, Robert Burns)- it was exhilarating and heartwarming at the same time.

The invitation received from Brigadier David Alfrey, chief executive, and producer of the Tattoo said, “It would be an honor to welcome the Citadel cadets back to the Tattoo. The Band performed with us to huge plaudits and it would be wonderful to present their talents to the Tattoo audience once more.”

We earnestly express our gratitude to this distinguished organization for the consideration it has shown to The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes on this occasion – and in years past, said Gen.

Glenn M. Walters, USMC (Ret.), president of The Citadel. Our cadets are honored and humbled by the opportunity to participate alongside the accomplished military bands and performers from around the world on the venerable Edinburgh Castle Esplanade in 2020.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo exposes new growth and turnover targets

The popular tourist event at Edinburgh Castle wants to double its turnover to £20m by 2025 and reach an audience of a billion people through an international expansion program.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has revealed it wants to double its turnover to £20m by 2025 and reach an audience of a billion people through an international expansion program. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo exposes new growth and turnover targets
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo exposes new growth and turnover targets

The Tattoo, which has already staged shows in Australia and New Zealand in the last 15 years, wants to increase its popularity Down Under as well as secure tours in China and Canada from 2019 onwards.

The ambition for the Tattoo - a world showcase event that sells out in Edinburgh every year but is bound by the physical size of the Castle Esplanade at just 8,800 seats per show - is described as a "step change" for the organization.

The 1 billion figure is a tenfold increase in its current audience.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Producer and Chief Executive Brigadier David Allfrey said: The Tattoo is one of the greatest shows on earth, attracting audiences across the globe to Edinburgh and selling out year on year.

"We are a small company but we have big ambitions and are focused on delivering a show that is bigger and better, more technically advanced and visually thrilling every year."

The Tattoo sells 220,000 tickets for its Edinburgh show each August and generates £77m annually for the economy with a further £30m value added in full-time employment.

In 2016 performances in Australia and New Zealand generated more than 240,000 ticket sales and a combined estimate of £50 million gross economic impacts to the cities of Melbourne and Wellington.

The Tattoo is already in dialogue with the Scottish, UK and international governments, local promoters and support networks.

Recently the Tattoo's own house band, Pipers Trail, has supported cultural exchanges to the likes of Germany, the Czech Republic, Norway, and China.

Brigadier Allfrey continued: "Edinburgh is an amazing stage and will always be our home, but for us to continue to thrive as an organization, we need to look beyond the esplanade and the walls of the city.

Our aim is to continue to grow revenue streams overseas, so we can continue to successfully deliver commercial benefits and reinvest in Scotland. We already do to the tune of £77 million a year and we have the ambition to do so much more.

“Our previous tours have shown there is a massive aspiration for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo globally.”

A ‘Tattoo’ Isn’t a Skin Stamp:

The word comes from the closing-time cry ‘Doe den tap toe’ (Turn off the taps) in the pubs of the Low Countries. The British adopted the practice of playing a regiment’s drums and pipes through the streets to signal that the keg taps should be turned so that soldiers would return to their barracks before their evening curfew lapsed.

International In Scope:

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo attracts performers from over 48 countries across six continents. This is echoed in its spectators too, as a third of attendees come from abroad.

Well Established:

The first Edinburgh Tattoo took place in 1950 when there were just eight items in the program. Edinburgh Military Tattoo is just closer to its 70th anniversary that the International Festival and Fringe are celebrating next year in August 2020.

Sells Like Hotcakes:

With a cast of over 1,000 and an exhilarating program that includes thunderous military flybys, spectacular fireworks, rousing anthems, and a holiday atmosphere, it’s unsurprising that 95 percent of Tattoo Tickets are usually gone several months in advance.

Happens Come Rain Or Shine:

Scotland is very changeable when it comes to good weather, and yet not a single performance of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has ever been canceled.
Home Advantage:

Edinburgh Castle is HQ to one of Scotland’s most senior cavalry regiments, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Also known as the Carabineers and Greys, the oldest surviving cavalry of the line in the British Army is always at the center of the Tattoo’s pipe and drum action.

Gives Back To The Community:

Over the years, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has given $10 million to service and civilian and arts organizations, such as the Edinburgh International Festival.

Traditional To The Bone:

Custom dictates that the famous Burns anthem, Auld Lang Syne, is sung at the end of each Tattoo, so make sure you’re on friendly terms with your neighbors. it’s lead by a spotlit Lone Piper, who plays a haunting lament. The first of these pipers, standing high up on the Esplanade Castle walls, was Pipe Major George Stoddart.

What To Wear:

If you really want to get into the spirit of things, purchase a kilted skirt for the bonnie lass and high-waist Highland trews for the lad at the Tattoo’s official shop.
