The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo’s Homecoming Festival-2020

One of these performers are Color Sergeant Barry Young, a member of the Royal Regiment of Scotland who first performed at the Tattoo in 1993 and has done so 11 times since. This year, he has co-written the musical arrangements for the Tam O’Shanter dance pieces, which will be performed by the Australian Highland Dance Troupe. Event Fans who want to join this iconic fiesta can buy Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets from our most trusted and reliable online platform.

In the past a couple of years, I’ve been lucky enough to get wheeled onto the esplanade to play the piano for the dancers; it’s such a privilege to do that.

Writing the music for Tam O’Shanter was a slow process but it’s very rewarding when you see the final product. While this year’s Homecoming theme will play a prominent role in the Tattoo’s program, the international show-stoppers for which the event has become famous will still be out in force.

On the home front, he thinks that the Tam O’Shanter piece is an interesting rollercoaster ride and reveals that the Massed Bands of the Royal Air Force about 120 musicians in all will be joined by eight power-driven fiddlers. But complete all the discussion of this year’s acts, it's Major General Loudon’s love for the Tattoo and its cultural inheritance that shines through most brightly.

I honestly believe you would be hard-pressed to find another Festival event anywhere in the world that’s been going for 60 years that blends this amazing mixture of magical setting, composition and display in such an affected and much-loved way.

What is The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Festival?

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo put on show in August-2020 during the Edinburgh International Celebration, which involves the famous Fringe Festival. Event Fans who want to join this iconic festival can buy Edinburgh Military Tattoo Tickets from our most trusted and reliable online platform.

If you’ve never had the opportunity to experience a military tattoo elsewhere, then you’re probably wondering what I’m even talking about. Firstly, it’s nothing to do with getting a tattoo! The name “tattoo” comes from the 17th and 18th centuries when a cry of ‘doe den tap toe’ which meant ‘turn off the taps’ and piping and drums signaled to the soldiers that the pubs were closed and they must return to the barracks.
Fast-forward to now, and a Scottish military tattoo is known as a performance of music or a display by the armed forces. The most famous and majestic of all is the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, affectional well-known in Edinburgh simply as “the Tattoo”.
But what will you see if you get tickets to the Tattoo? Each year there is a different theme, with 2019 having the theme “Kaleidoscope” after the invention by the Scottish Sir David Brewster in about 1816. Each year one of the UK’s armed forces lead the military tattoo, but groups from all over the world will also perform.
When I went to the Edinburgh Tattoo I saw everything from huge Scottish pipe bands, to jazz and blues singing Americans, rugby-playing and dancing Kiwi’s, motorbike stunts, Shetland fiddlers, highland dancers, and much more. You can expect to be treated to a wide variety of performances and entertainment, designed to showcase talent from around the world.
Throughout the performance, Edinburgh Castle is like additional troupe members, with video and pictures being projected onto the smokescreen. So many cables are used in the show to get all of this right that if they were spread out in a line they would reach from Edinburgh to Glasgow!

A show of Military force

A favorite with international audiences and performers acts from over 40 countries will be presented, with a large portion of its 200,000 plus audience journeying from abroad to see the Tattoo spectacle. Highlights include performances from The Massed Bands of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, His Majesty the King’s Guards Band and Drill Team of Norway and the celebrated Massed Pipes & Drums and The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
With so much to plan for, the amount of preparation that goes into organizing the spectacle is impressive. According to Major General Loudon, the schedules for 2010 and 2011 are already almost full and he is even thinking as far ahead as 2015.

Luckily, there’s no shortage of interest from performers eager to cement their place in Tattoo history. ‘I don’t think there is a week that passes when I do not receive a handful of DVDs or letters from people around the world asking how they can participate. But what you’ve got to do is sort out the probables from the possible. It involves a mixture of quality, scale as a spectacle and making sure that when they perform, what they’re trying to do is leave an impression on people that has either tugged their heart-strings or made them stamp their feet. And if they can do both of those things in the one-act, that’s a perfect solution.’
A show of Military force

For the third time in the Tattoo’s history, acts from Singapore will also make an appearance, including a detachment of Gurkha Pipes and Drums together with a 55-strong Police Military Band and an all-woman Police Pipe Band. Pupils from Queen Victoria School in Dunblane will also present a display of piping, drumming and Highland dancing to celebrate their school’s 100th anniversary.
