The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo | This is a show you will never forget
The Edinburgh Tattoo

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has nothing to do with the art of skin painting, and everything to do with showcasing the music, dance, and precision of performers from around the world, with a particular focus of course on military bands.

This being Scotland, pipes and drummers feature heavily, but there are musical instruments and performances of all types – we’ve seen everything from a youth motorcycle team to a New Zealand pipe band at the Edinburgh Tattoo.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the maximum watched of all the Edinburgh festivals, with nearly 100 million people tuning in to watch it on TV.

Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets can be purchased online, or in-person in Edinburgh at the box office. There’s a show every night for much of August, but it’s definitely worth purchasing in advance to be sure you get the date that you want as many sell out.

The performances are fantastic, the music is usually a mix of classic and modern, and the ceremony and co-ordination of all the performers are world-class.

A highlight, of course, is the Lone Piper playing on the walls of Edinburgh Castle, which makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

hopefully, you really impressed by the New Zealand contribution, which featured a projected dragon and the Lord of the Rings theme music.

At the end of each show, the Finale brings onto the Esplanade all the performers from that night's event for a climax that includes the taking of the salute. Participants then march down Castle hill to embark on coaches that take them back to their barracks before the spectators follow them.

The Tattoo performance usually lasts between 90 minutes and 2 hours, with pre-allocated seating, and has never been canceled due to the weather.

Make sure you get ready in terms of clothing as it can get a bit cool in the evenings in Edinburgh – even in August. This is definitely a show you will never forget and is well worth your time to attend.

Tips for attending the Edinburgh Festivals in August

Having gone through the five major August festivals including Edinburgh Military Tattoo, you must have to consider just a few tips that’s help you to make you jorney memorable in Edinburgh.

First, and this should be quite obvious from the post, just remember that you don’t need to limit yourself to just one festival when you’re visiting Edinburgh during August!

Many people focus on the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, but there are five other festivals going on throughout the month, and taking the time to check out some of those during your visit.

Our next tip would be to plan for the weather to be, well, variable. Scotland is relatively far north, and whilst you do get sunny and warm days in August, these are by no means guaranteed, and temperatures can vary from 10C – 30C (50F – 86F).

It can also rain pretty much anytime, and if you’re attending a night time performance of the Tattoo in particular, which is in a fairly exposed spot, you need to be prepared for most eventualities.

Our suggestion would be to dress in layers, carry a small poncho, and just roll with whatever Scotland decides to throw at you.

Our third tip would be to leave yourself plenty of time to get from venue to venue. Central Edinburgh is very walkable, so getting around on foot is going to be your best option, but be aware that the crowds of people can make this process a little slower than you might otherwise imagine.

If you learn some of the city shortcuts, and in particular the closes that run off the Royal Mile, you can save yourself some time, and if possible, try to avoid the congested areas.

Our last tip is around the accommodation. Edinburgh gets seriously busy in August, and hotel occupancy can be as high as 97%, with rates much higher than the rest of the year. In fact, finding accommodation can be such a challenge, that it’s worth breaking it out into its own section. So, here’s a guide on:

How to Find Accommodation during the Edinburgh Festivals

If you’re looking for a specific kind of hotel or room type, then you definitely need to book as far in advance as possible, because rooms sell out a long time in advance for the August festival season. If you’re more flexible, then you will have more choice, but you definitely need to plan in advance nonetheless.

Here is good news for foreign visitors, that there are plenty of options for accommodation in August. A good many of Edinburgh’s residents actually leave the city and put their properties up on different sites.

Another option is to get a place a minute outside the city center. There are a number of satellite towns around Edinburgh with a 30 – 45 minutes public transport connection, where you might find better value options.

Edinburgh public transport network is outstanding, and night buses often run into the early hours, so that is definitely an option if you’re looking to save money and don’t mind a bit of a “commute”.

Otherwise, we suggest the usual suspects for accommodation booking, The best way to find the finest deals on accommodation is Booking.com. they have the best range of properties and the most competitive prices. Please make sure that you plan in advance, and ready to pay more than you normally would for the August period.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo placed an ad for unpaid roles

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual event produced by the British Armed Forces on the cobbled esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. Tattoo fans who want to join this iconic festival can buy Edinburgh Tattoo 2020 Tickets from our most consistent and unfailing online platform.

Every day of the week in the evening and twice on Saturdays, a wide range of moving performances by thousands of drummers, dancers, pipers, and musicians. However, the only show you won't want to miss is the Massed Military Bands and Massed Pipes and Drums.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo placed an ad for unpaid roles
The Edinburgh Tattoo

Since its inception in 1950 with only eight items featured in the program, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has become a large-scale event in which 220,000 people participate each year.

The showcase military event announced "an exciting opportunity for musicians to perform in a stage orchestra" in exchange for accommodation and meals only.
Now the Union of Musicians (MU) has called it "shocking" while the event's bosses have pretended to expand the possibilities of playing.

"Our members rely on the performing arts as a vital source of income and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo sends a dangerous message that this highly skilled work is not worth much - even at such an important cultural event," said Scottish UC organizer Caroline Sewell.

The exploitation of low-wage workers during the capital’s celebrations has become a growing concern for unions and activists.

The Fair Fringe campaign was launched in July 2017 with the aim of highlighting the "unfair and dangerous" conditions expected from many marginal workers.
Now in its 70th year, the Tattoo attracts more than 200,000 spectators on average each year on its race on the Castle Esplanade.

However, despite the announcement of a new six-figure sponsorship agreement with Edinburgh Airport, it emerged in February, the Edinburgh Tattoo placed an ad for unpaid roles.

The announcement indicated that it "opened" the event to traditional military musicians and invited groups of everyone from the age of 18.

Although "lay people" were encouraged to apply, the announcement stated that musicians must be able to perform at an "excellent level".

The candidates were told that it was "better" to perform in a performance group, a pit orchestra or a musical theater group despite the lack of remuneration.

Although allowed to take on other paid tasks, candidates were asked to prioritize tattooing by making themselves available for a week of intense rehearsals as well as for shows.

All volunteer musicians would be responsible for travel costs to Edinburgh, the announcement added, although food and accommodation will be provided for those living outside of the city. Sewell said it was "a serious concern" for the MU and urged tattoo heads to rethink.

She added: "It is nothing less than exploitation and we encourage our members and all the musicians not to accept this kind of work."

The UM is campaigning against free work for professionals thanks to its Work Not Play campaign.

The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo

Where: Edinburgh Castle
Perhaps the most unusual Edinburgh Festival is the Tattoo, one of the largest military displays in the world. Artists and infantrymen are spotted years in advance to represent their culture and country in Edinburgh in the context of Edinburgh Castle. Each year, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo sells, with around 220,000 people in attendance.

Suggestion: In addition to booking 2020 Tattoo Tickets as far in advance as possible, be sure to warm up. Take a big coat, hat, scarf, and even a blanket if you can. it's august but, it's Scotland and it's a night show.

Other festivals in Edinburgh throughout the year

Edinburgh Hogmanay

Where: Princes Street
Nowhere else does the New Year look like Scotland. In Edinburgh, the Hogmanay Street Party is a huge event with many famous groups performing in anticipation of the New Year, as well as the impressive fireworks display. Nothing like ringing in the New Year by singing Auld Lang Syne with your new Scottish friends.

Suggestion: Forget the higher bar prices of other street parties. For the Edinburgh Hogmanay celebration, you can bring your own alcohol if it is not in glass bottles.

Edinburgh International Film Festival

Where: Filmhouse and other places
Founded in 1947 in conjunction with the International Festival and Edinburgh Fringe, the Edinburgh International Film Festival is the oldest in the world. The film house is a fantastic independent cinema where most of the films are screened.

There's even a bar for a drink while watching the latest movies before their release date. What could be better ?!

Suggestion: like any other film festival, Edinburgh is hosting a red carpet event to celebrate the opening. Come down the first night to watch stars like Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton honor us with their presence.

Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival

Where: George Square and other places
Edinburgh may seem like an unlikely place to have such a Jazz and Blues presence, but that's the beauty of Edinburgh, there is something for everyone.

Suggestion: Discover George Square Gardens for the heart of the festival. More intimate outdoor music is played here while you step into the food of local vendors and chat with your friends.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo | It is the largest festival of its kind

The Edinburgh Tattoo will start from the 7-29th August of this year. The tattoo is just closer to its 70th birthday that is celebrating in August 2020. Fans can buy Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets from our most consistent and unfailing online platform.

Where's the Edinburgh Tattoo?

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle - arguably one of the most impressive castles in Britain. Edinburgh Castle is impressive at any time of the year, but it looks best when dressed in full military attire during the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo | It is the largest festival of its kind
Edinburgh Military Tattoo | It is the largest festival of its kind

Edinburgh Castle is on a hill overseeing the city and is almost as impressive from a distance as up on your doorstep. Edinburgh Tattoo aside, any visit to Edinburgh at any time of the year should include a visit to the castle - especially for visitors to America and Canada who have far fewer castles than the majority of European countries.

How old is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo?

Edinburgh Military Tattoo's very first dates back to 1950. The same year, Hollywood film producer Mike Todd (who was also Elizabeth Taylor's fourth husband) made a documentary about the tattoo.

It started purely as a British military affair, but invitations were sent out in the years that followed. Not only was it more entertaining for spectators to see the different military performances, but it was a great way to forge and consolidate military alliances.

In 1952, the first non-British regiments participated in the Edinburgh Tattoo; this included regiments from the Netherlands, Canada, and France. In the 1960s, the event was televised and proved to be very popular around the world and in 1968, color people appeared on TVs.

Around 35% of the people who attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo each year come from outside the UK. It is the biggest attraction for tourists wishing to enjoy the atmosphere, the visual spectacle and the range of musical performances.

Edinburgh's military tattoo is different every year. Regular Scottish and British regiments vary their musical and drilling performances from year to year, and there are different guest regiments from different countries.

Canada, the United States, and France are all common participants, and each country's military brings with it its own style of music and military ceremony. In the 2018 Military Tattoo, the special guest regiment came from Japan.

It is the first time that the Japanese army takes part in the festivities. In addition to musical performances, with marches and other military ceremonies, you can also expect several spectacular fireworks during the tattoo throughout August.

I hope this guide has answered all of your questions about the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It is the largest festival of its kind and is worth attending if you are visiting Edinburgh in August - perhaps as part of our Two Cities Scotland tour.
