Edinburgh is a city with over 3000 performances in 300 different places

Edinburgh is a city with fantastic locations, ranging from large concert halls to small theaters and each one offers amazing architecture inside. More than 3000 performances in 300 different places, it is very easy to mismanage your time during Edinburgh festivals. But, with a little planning, you can be sure to see everyone's best pieces.
Here is a summary of the five different festivals in August.

The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been impressing crowds against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle for years, and the custom-built seats around the Castle Esplanade are impressive. Fans can buy Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets online.

Edinburgh is a city with over 3000 performances in 300 different places
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Even more impressive is that the wind or the rain comes, the show has never been canceled! While the weather is unpredictable in Scotland, the show has always continued, and even if the rain falls, the fantastic atmosphere and the whole castle make up for it.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is probably the most famous of the five, which literally gives it control of the whole city. Performers from around the world bring their shows here and as long as they can find a place, they have a show.

With thousands of performers and shows from around the world, this mix of comedy, dance, acrobats and many other performing arts wows international crowds, from circus tents to underground crossroads.

For street performers, The Royal Mile is a central hub for action with, flyers and the chance to sample some of the performances as well as buy tickets at the official Fringe store.

The Fringe isn't just limited to shows, many events and activities such as Silent Disco tours offer plenty of ways to keep you entertained while buzzing with breweries all over the city to help you enjoy the atmosphere.

Edinburgh International Book Festival

When you think of a book festival, your mind is probably walking through a large bookstore where people drink cups of tea and exchange tips for the next read.

They have bookstores, three in fact, and they serve an average cup of tea, but there is so much more going on at Charlotte Square Gardens, the beautiful, generally closed square where the Book Festival takes place, that it really deserves to be part of your visit to Edinburgh in August.

You will have the opportunity to hear from many authors that you may not have heard of before reading segments of their books and sharing their passion behind it.

Edinburgh Art Festival

Innumerable different forms make up the definition of art, and the lines can sometimes seem blurred through the five Edinburgh festivals in August, but like the diverse program offered at the Art Festival, the places are just as intriguing.

Edinburgh is full of hidden gems and places to explore slightly off the beaten track, and the Edinburgh Art Festival is a great way to see the city while enjoying a wide range of great cultural expressions.

From classical music in churches converted to pop-up events in wildlife gardens, the art festival program is brimming with local and international talent and will have you reconsider what art can be.

“Festivals provide a safe space for people to explore and experience new things and people navigate a festival with an element of surprise. This gives us a great opportunity to help people visit galleries and explore our programs that don't normally do it. "

Edinburgh International Festival

While for many who visit Edinburgh in August, a show is a show, anyone familiar with the history of festivals can tell you that the Edinburgh International Festival was the original festival, with the Fringe growing alongside to host artists who also wanted to perform in Edinburgh.

The program of the Edinburgh International Festival is truly exceptional in its diversity and, like the more contemporary shows, traditional pieces such as The Prisoner at The Lyceum and La Cenerentola by Opera de Lyon were just as exceptional.

Like the Edinburgh International Festival, the distribution of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo seems to be growing. With over 1000 artists from Scotland, the UK and around the world, this is a truly international spectacle.

A journey of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

The last military action at the castle took place during the second Jacobite uprising in 1745. The Jacobite army, under Charles Edward Stuart, captured Edinburgh without a fight in September 1745, but the castle remained between at the hands of General George Preston, who refused to surrender. The Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets can be booked online.

After their victory over the government army at Prestonpans on September 21, the Jacobites attempted to block the castle. Preston's response was to bombard Jacobite positions in the city after the demolition of several buildings and the death of four people, Charles lifted the blockade.

The Jacobites themselves did not have heavy weapons to respond, and in November they entered England, leaving Edinburgh to be the garrison of the castle. The uprising would eventually perish on Culloden field in April of the following year.

During the following century, the vaults of the castle were used to hold prisoners of war during several conflicts, notably the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the wars Napoleonic (1803-1815). After a massive escape of prisoners in 1811, it ceased to be used as such from 1814.

The Edinburgh castle regularly began to assume a different role as a national monument. The palace began to be open to visitors in the 1830s. The Sainte-Marguerite chapel was "rediscovered" in 1845, having served as a store for many years.

Works in the 1880s, saw the Argyle tower built above the Portcullis Gate and the great hall restored after years of use as a barracks. A new Gatehouse was built in 1888. The permanent garrison moved in 1923, although the castle was briefly used again as a prison during the Second World War, for captured pilots from the Luftwaffe.

The castle was entrusted to "historic Scotland" when the agency was created in 1991 and was designated a historic monument in 1993. Today, it fulfills several ceremonial, tourist and administrative functions, the military is always present. He is probably best known today for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which takes place on the Esplanade every year in August.

The basis of each performance is a parade of pipes and massive drums from Scottish regiments, and since its inception in 1950, the tattoo has developed a complex format that includes a variety of guest performers from around the world, although always with a military majority focus.

The highlight of the evening is the solitary bagpiper on the ramparts of the castle, playing a pibroch in memory of the comrades-in-arms, followed by massive groups joining a mix of traditional Scottish melodies.

The tattoo attracts an annual audience of around 217,000 people and is broadcast in around thirty countries to an estimated television audience of 100 million. The military tattoo is a pageant of color with visiting display teams coming from all over the world
Another tradition that visitors are able to observe is the discharge of the One O’Clock Gun, a time signal, fired every day at precisely 13:00, excepting Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas Day.
