The Duke of Cambridge and The Prince of Wales
attended the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo for the first time in 2017. The Edinburgh
Tattoo 2020 Tickets can be booked online.
A cast of over 1,200 people from around the world
performed at Edinburgh Castle in front of the royal duo. The performances
included more than 250 pipers and drummers, five British military groups and
the first Japanese act of the event, as well as major contingents from France
and the United States.
Prince William and Prince Charles both attended the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo |
Charles is known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland, and it was the Rothesay flag that flew above the castle once arrived. The Prince, dressed in a Royal Navy admiral uniform, was at the Tattoo as a guest of honor, accompanied by William.
In front of the sold-out show, the royal duo made a
toast to good health, given in Gaelic, with a 10-year Glenkinchie whiskey dram,
which comes from the distillery closest to Edinburgh.
The 9th French Marine Infantry Brigade Fanfare Band
was among the highlights, with Better, Faster, Harder, Strong with two of the
musicians wearing Daft Punk style helmets.
Some fireworks had to be canceled due to strong
winds, which also caused the central band of Japan Ground Self Defense Force
Central to fall on the drummer halfway through their set.
The royal duo received a special performance before
the tattoo at the Palace of Holy Roodhouse. The acts gave Charles and William
close representation in the yard. The prince and duke then spent time talking
with artists and posed for a group photo.
William wore a black tie with Submariner Dolphins
and Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. Its 68th season recognizes 2017 as the
year of the Royal Navy and precedes the official name of the aircraft carrier
HMS Prince of Wales later this year.
It also marks the Year of Scottish History, Heritage
and Archeology with a second theme "Splash of Tartan". Charles and
William, who takes the title of Earl of Strathearn north of the border,
attended the tattoo around the middle of his August run.
The first Edinburgh Tattoo took place in 1950, with
the first overseas regiment in 1952. Since then, 48 countries from six
continents have been represented at the Tattoo.
It attracts an annual audience of around 220,000
people, which means that more than 14 million people have attended the Tattoo
since its inception.
