The first public Edinburgh Military Tattoo was titled "Something About a Soldier" and took place in 1949 at the Ross Bandstand in the Princes Street Gardens. The first official Edinburgh military tattoo, with eight items on the program, took place in 1950.

It attracted some 6,000 spectators seated in simple benches and scaffolding structures around the north, south and east sides of the of Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. In 2018, the capacity of the stands was able to accommodate a night audience of 8,800 people, allowing 220,000 people to watch the multiple live performances.

Since the 1970s on average, just over 217,000 people have seen the Edinburgh Tattoo live on Edinburgh Castle Esplanade each year, and Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets has sold in advance in the past decade. 30% of the audience comes from Scotland and 35% from the rest of the United Kingdom. The remaining 35% audience is made up of 70,000 foreign visitors.

The temporary stands on the castle esplanade, used in 2018, had a capacity of 8,800 people. New £ 16 million spectator stands and corporate hospitality boxes went into operation in 2011.

The new temporary stands have reduced the time required to erect and dismantle them from the original two months to one month, allowing the esplanade to host events at other times of the year.

In 2018, the tattoo was to be televised in 40 countries, which would allow 100 to 300 million people to see the event on television worldwide. In Britain, the BBC broadcasts the event every year, with comments in 2009 and 2010 provided by BBC Radio Scotland presenter Iain Anderson.

The tattoo is run for charitable causes and in 2017 it was estimated that over the years, £ 10 million had been donated to artistic, military and civil charities, such as the Charity Fund of the army.

However, the biggest advantage has been that, according to independent figures, it generates £ 88 million in revenue for the economy of Edinburgh each year.
