Edinburgh comes alive over the summer. As theatre-lovers flock to see the thousands of shows in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Fringe and International Festival, another special event is being held at Edinburgh Castle.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2020 is an annual chain of Military Tattoos performed by the British Armed Forces, as well as Military bands, and Commonwealth and performance teams around the world, on the esplanade of the castle every August as part of the Edinburgh Festival.

When the first Edinburgh Military Tattoo was held in 1950, there were eight items on the program and about 6,000 spectators. This year, there are more than 1,200 performers, including nearly 300 young people in recognition of Scotland’s Year of Young People. Each night of the tattoo, which runs until 25 August, is expected to attract almost 9,000 people.

This year, performers include the Royal Cavalry of the Sultanate of Oman’s Pipers on horseback and its all-female marching band. Their show will be illustrated by projections of the desert and the Arabian sky.

The Banda Monumental de Mexico will also entertain audiences with Mariachi music and dance. Closer to home, look out for Highland Dancers from Scotland, and the Top Secret Drum Corps and the Massed Pipes and Drums – a group of 250 military musicians from the UK.
